Exhibition Statement
The role of culture and art is for human beings to live like human beings, and it can also create a sense of solidarity among us. The global pandemic restricted our daily lives, increasing our sense of alienation and isolation, diminishing our sense of solidarity. It caused people to lose their emotional anchor and diluted human contact.
Artists, who are the bearers of culture, lost opportunities to present their works. This exhibition focused on photographic art – contemporary photography – which has a smaller commercial scale in Japan compared to other countries.
In addition to conventional exhibition methods, the exhibition utilized AR and other virtual exhibits so that people unable to attend in person, as well as those in remote areas and overseas, could view the exhibits. The exhibition provided bilingual, global online information on what the artists felt under these circumstances and how they related their experiences to their work, aiming to revitalize the photography art market in Japan.
Virtual Exhibition Space
The exhibition was also accessible through a metaverse platform, allowing visitors from anywhere in the world to experience the artwork virtually:

The virtual venue could be accessed via Google Chrome or Firefox on PC, or through the Spatial app on smartphones. Visitors could communicate with exhibiting artists by turning on their microphones in the virtual space.

About icon CONTEMPORARY PHOTOGRAPHY
icon CONTEMPORARY PHOTOGRAPHY is an initiative aimed at elevating the status of photographers in Japan and expanding the photography art market. While photographers are highly valued as artists in Western galleries and across Asia, Japan still struggles with recognizing the full artistic and commercial value of photography.
This platform brings together artists and audiences to grow together, with the goal of elevating Japan's art photography market to global standards. Through exhibitions, events, and online content, icon creates opportunities for photographers to showcase their work and engage with a global audience.
