The Origin of “icon”
From "Icon" to "Icon" : An Age When Images Born in Darkness Disseminate Existence
The word "icon" originates from the ancient Greek εἰκών (eikōn), derived from a verb meaning “to be like.” Signifying “image” or “likeness,” this word found its fulfillment in Byzantine icon painting—a practice of faithfully reproducing sacred prototypes. By depicting the same face again and again, icons permeated places of worship and propagated sanctity.
It was the camera obscura—the “dark room”—that brought a decisive turning point to this history of painting. This device, in which light passing through a tiny aperture projects an inverted image of the outside world, became a tool for painters once lenses were added in the 16th century, opening new horizons of realism for artists such as Vermeer. In the 19th century, when that projected image was successfully fixed by chemistry, photography was born. The reproduction of “likeness”—long the task of painting—was entrusted to light itself.
Today, this “manifestation through repetition” has taken yet another form. Personal icons flooding social media and digital spaces are no longer sacred images but proof of an age in which individual existence is multiplied and disseminated into visibility.
icon is a platform where contemporary Japanese photographers explore the universal themes of replication, representation, and the extension of existence, standing within photography’s lineage from the camera obscura to the digital age. From icon to icon—the image that emerged in darkness continues to spread across the world today.
